Woven Olefin fabric beside glossy PVC vinyl, water beading on one and filming on the other

Not PVC

Solution-dyed Olefin over a welded TPU bladder. It is the whole reason this costs what it costs.

MATERIALS

Five hundred dollars, explained

Almost every pool float sold in New Zealand is PVC. It is cheap, it is quick to make, and it goes chalky by the end of its second summer. The colour sits on the surface, so the moment UV gets at it the pigment breaks down and the float looks tired long before it stops holding air.

THREE THINGS

What it is actually made of

Olefin on the outside, a welded TPU bladder on the inside. None of it is vinyl.

Macro of solution-dyed Olefin fabric with a cut edge, the colour running right through each yarn.

SOLUTION-DYED OLEFIN

The pigment goes into the fibre while it is still liquid, so the colour runs right through each yarn rather than coating it. Cut it and it is the same colour all the way through. It is why the colour lasts seasons rather than months.

WELDED TPU BLADDER

The air sits in a thermoplastic polyurethane bladder inside the fabric cover, welded rather than glued. TPU holds pressure better than vinyl across a temperature swing and does not go brittle in the sun.

A BOXED EDGE

Boxed and piped like outdoor upholstery, so it holds its shape under your weight instead of folding in. It is also why it looks like furniture rather than a pool toy.

THE SPEC

Sit on fabric, not on plastic

The thing people notice first has nothing to do with longevity. A PVC float goes hot and sticky in the sun and clings to bare skin. Olefin stays cool and feels like upholstery, because that is what it is.
